Wellhead Severance and Recovery

Casing cutting & recovery

About

Cut and recover all well casings internally below the mudline at the same time

Our well severance and recovery tooling uses Claxton's proprietary xcalibre Abrasive Cutting technology – a proven approach that is more efficient than traditional mechanical methods and safer than explosives. Internal abrasive severance delivers clean and precise cuts, leaving a tidy seabed and eliminating the need for extensive dredging.

The tool enables single-trip cutting and recovery operations, reducing time and ensuring a secure retrieval process.

Speak to an expert

We have completed thousands of projects globally and have a track record of cutting:

  • Single & multi string casing / wellheads / conductors
  • Which can be a mixture of Uncemented or Cemented & eccentric
  • We have been involved with large scale projects for the cutting and recovery of platform jacket legs & piles
  • And can comfortably handle small and large diameter cutting - completed internally or externally

As xcalibre is our proprietary technology it enables Claxton to deliver unmatched performance and reliability - limiting potential NPT and maximising offshore execution efficiency.

We provide fit for purpose solutions – cutting through decommissioning complexity to deliver results for our clients.

Wellhead Interface - Retrieval Tools

The retrieval tool is hydraulically attached to the wellhead profile and the downhole tool secured through its centre. This combination ensures that the well’s preset cut depth is maintained.

After the well is severed, the retrieval tool has a pull capacity of 200Te to break mudline stiction forces and a payload capacity of 100Te to safely retrieve the cut wellhead and casing stub to the surface.

The system's compact design allows for deployment through the rig floor, vessel moon pool or overboard from the vessel by crane.

The modular design allows the unit to be configured on the job to switch between common wellhead profiles of differing sizes and aggressive slip profile to engage into plain pipe.

Full-bore access allows the tool to be run and secured, forming a fixed datum for other operations such as abrasive severance.

  • Works with any casing loading, eccentricity or contents
  • Cuts through any number of internal casing strings from 7" to 42"
  • Clean cuts with no need for extensive dredging
  • Modular design for reconfiguration on the job

Integral tooling for well abandonment programmes

To complement our extensive rental fleet of risers, we also offer a wide range of connectors, interfaces and lifting tools. These range from simple adaptors, hubs and flanges to hydraulic subsea connectors for both modern and obsolete wellheads.

If you need to connect or interface to an obsolete wellhead we don’t have in stock, we have the ability in-house to fully design, analyse, manufacture and gain type approval for connectors and interfaces. This means that even if the wellheads or temporary abandonment caps are no longer supported by the original equipment manufacturer (OEM), we can provide a bespoke solution.
