Vessel-based rigless well decommissioning

Mermaid UK asked Claxton to mobilise our Abrasive Cutting System and SWAT™ (Suspended Well Abandonment Tool) at short notice, due to the equipment’s reliability and impressive track record within well decommissioning.

The project was split into two phases, phase one delivered intervention services, phase two was the cutting and recovery of subsea wellheads.

For phase one the Claxton designed SWAT was utilised to perforate, recover well fluids and place environmental plugs in five wells. This was completed across four separate pieces of infrastructure connected to the Ninian, Banff, Kyle and Strathspey installations, all operations were rigless with equipment being deployed from a vessel.

Phase two was the cutting and recovery of the wellheads, utilising our leading abrasive cutting and wellhead recovery tools.

This phase was a Multi Operator campaign for three different clients and covered 25 wells in total. Ranging from single to four strings, a mixture of cemented and non-cemented strings, centralisers and also eccentric casing, all bringing different challenges but were not an issue for Claxton’s industry leading abrasive cutting tooling.

Claxton deliver a comprehensive vessel based decommissioning package and have a built an enviable track record in rigless well abandonment and abrasive cutting by developing leading technology and building project expertise.
