1. SWAT™ DELIVERS UNIQUE DECOMMISSIONING SOLUTION

When sister company InterMoor, approached Claxton to consider a technical challenge an operator had, Claxton’s partnership was key in considering an approach for the decommissioning of four wells, three wells in the Southern North Sea and one well in the East Irish Sea; three wells having subsea wellheads and one having a mudline system.

This union of Claxton’s tooling and InterMoor’s project delivery gave the operator a reliable and economical alternative against other proposals they received and the suspended well abandonment tool – SWAT™ provided the ideal product solution for this multi well campaign.

Completed within 27 days, SWAT™ was deployed using the ‘MV Island Valiant’ vessel through an A-frame work over moonpool, landed on each wellhead and then used to carry out casing perforation and placement of the required cement barriers in each well.

The project resulted in the ‘MV Island Valiant’ vessel being able to transit from the Southern North Sea to the Eastern Irish Sea and become operational on the well within three days.

SABRE™ SUBSEA ABRASIVE JET CUTTING SYSTEM USED TO ABANDON CAMELOT

Claxton was a key player in the decommissioning of the North Sea Camelot fields and the removal of Camelot Alpha platform with the plugging and abandonment of the fields’ six platform wells. This was followed by the severance of the well casings some 5m below the seabed, a task for which Claxton was ideally qualified.

Part of the process was to prove that complete severance within the well had been achieved; for this, Claxton used their own designed jacking system to temporarily raise the combined casings and then ease them back down for complete removal later.

The Camelot wells contained casings ranging in diameter from 9-inch to 30-inch. The cutting process presented few challenges. In fact, the biggest challenge for the team was working out how to accommodate the various components of the SABRE™ abrasive cutting system in the limited deck space available on the small, normally unmanned Camelot platform. Support beams were used to spread the load of the high-pressure pumps, air compressor, supply tank, mixing system and umbilical required to run the SABRE™ system.

3. ONE-STOP DECOMMISSIONING SOLUTION

Claxton’s comprehensive, bespoke and flexible services helped an operator plug and abandon their wells in the southern North Sea.

From the outset, it was clear that Claxton’s SABRE™ subsea abrasive cutting system would be a vital part of any campaign to cut and recover the wells. However, SABRE’s growing reputation meant that the units were in high demand at the time, with healthy backlogs, and not immediately available. Claxton promptly manufactured a new SABRE™ unit with a reduced footprint designed specifically for the client’s campaign.

The operator used Claxton’s equipment and services to improve its decommissioning efficiency and capacity, which helped to reduce costs and release resources for other projects. The company was also able to take advantage of Claxton’s extensive riser inventory to get what it needed quickly.
