Interview: the benefits of slot recovery operations in lean times
WHY DID YOU WANT TO TALK ABOUT SLOT RECOVERY SPECIFICALLY?
It is a well-proven technology that provides a cost-effective option for operators looking to maximise old assets. By recovering platform slots – or rather the well bays they take up – from uneconomic wells operators gain a host of benefits.
The process gives you many options to improve or extend production… You can drill a new well into the existing formation – either for production, water injection or steam injection. Additionally, the operator has the option of using directional drilling to enter other formations nearby or accessing a new part of the same reservoir.
Doing any of the above can significantly extend production from older assets – for a fraction of the cost associated with a new platform or subsea development work.
ARE THERE ANY OTHER BENEFITS?
While not every platform will accommodate a rigless slot recovery, it’s important to note that rigless slot recoveries can be extremely attractive in terms of cost and flexibility.
For instance, if your rig can move on to carry out further P&A work, or on to another task entirely, it may be beneficial to release it from the recovery operation and carry out the rest of the slot recovery operation riglessly.
Conversely, if a rig is being brought in to plug and abandon just one well, then it could be more worthwhile to have the rig pull the conductor rather than bring in a support vessel and rigless recovery spread.
LOOKING FORWARD, HOW DO YOU EXPECT THE MARKET IN THE MIDDLE EAST TO EVOLVE?
Given the volumes of assets that are either exceeding or close to exceeding their design lives, I don’t think it’s too big a stretch to say that asset life extension and removal operations will start to come higher up the agenda of some operators – particularly as the region is so vibrant in terms of activity in general.
Operators will want to maximise their returns and are increasingly turning to companies like Claxton who have significant experience in this area from work in the North Sea.
